The lists are always coming out the best of this and that by state. Granted when I have travelled, I have given those a gander and tried some of the locales because I have no idea. But, if you know things locally, you know they miss out on some of them.
Today the topic is biscuits. This is one that we here on the Western Slope know very well. We have a series of restaurants that have biscuits that put others to shame. On this list, they list a place called the Denver Biscuit Company. I think they were lazy and just picked a place that had biscuit in the name. Now, granted, I have not been there, but if you have ever experienced the biscuits at Starvin’ Arvin’s or the Pufferbelly, you know they are probably wrong.
If you know much about the history of characters on the Western Slope, you have heard of Arvin Leany, the founder of Starvin’ Arvin’s. The rumor goes that he was once offered $50,000 for the recipe for his wonderful biscuits. Of course he turned it down and we still get to appreciate those big ole fathead biscuits.
Another rumor is that Cracker Barrel will not come here because of the Starvin’ Arvin chain and the strength of its amazing biscuits and cinnamon rolls. No one can confirm this story, but it is fun to tell.
How good is Starvin’ Arvin’s? It is so good that my friends and relatives come from all around and the one place they always insist we eat is Starvin’ Arvin’s.
So, while you are welcome to your own opinion, for me the best biscuit I have ever had is Starvin’ Arvin’s. Yes, this includes a trip or two to the Loveless Cafe outside Nashville. While they are famous for their biscuits, the best are still right here on the Western Slope.
By the way, there are a lot of people in Tennessee that would disagree with this article too.
